Description
Background
Emthonjeni Wokuphila Community Development Centre was established in 2004, as a welfare program run in partnership with the church called The AFM of SA-God’s Ark Assembly with the focus to reach out to the needy community members even outside the Church walls. The organization started 17 years ago when Daniel Mahlangu the founder identified the disparate need of children, the youth and adults in the area. The main course of the problem is unemployment, poverty, alcohol abuse and immorality. EWCDC started as a burden for his and other nearby churches to begin compassion ministries to the suffering and needy people of Kwa-Mhlanga, in the Thembisile Hani District of Mpumalanga.
EWCDC started as a drop-in Centre under a mentorship program provided by Masibambisane Community Development Center until the year 2010 and has been reaching out to School going orphans and vulnerable children (OVC’s) age of 6-21 years in the wider Kwa-Mhlanga area. At present EWCDC is much more than just a drop-in Centre as OVC’s needs more than food and clothes, is EWCDC’s goal to give holistic Christian care to people who are in need. This care will help children and their families in their development and their struggle for live due to HIV/Aids and related sicknesses and problems.
The Problem
HIV/Aids, together with Covid-19 pandemic and other related diseases as well as poverty have an enormous impact on the Kwa-Mhlanga community. Every single day we find more families and children who are in desperate need of the basics in life. We find children in our community who are hungry, who don’t have parents anymore. We find children who are struggling at school because they don’t have enough to eat and they cannot concentrate some because they don’t have parents who understand the work they are struggling with. Everywhere we look we see children who need to be cared for, who need to be fed and who need some Christian guidance in their lives.
The Solution
At present at our Centre we give Christian holistic care for around 79 OVC’s at the Centre and 59 in the field. Besides daily meals and a safe place to play we help them with their homework as part of the after school program. Every child has its own file with all available information, and we are now developing individual care plans for all the children. We provide in basic health care, spiritual care and psycho-social support for OVC’s and their families.
